A few months ago, during a spring rainstorm, I noticed a hummingbird hanging on to her little nest for dear life as the wind shook the tree. Days later, landscapers removed the tree and, with that, the nest and eggs of the hummingbird. The distressed flapping of the mama bird over the now bare spot in the ground caught my eye, and I instantly connected with her loss of home and unhatched baby birds. Not long after, the bird came closer to my door and balcony and hung out, like she sensed I understood her loss. This experience opened up my emotions around loss and grief and gave me time for much-needed introspection and release.
When I briefed the designer who worked on my new logo, I also shared the story about the hummingbird. While brainstorming design concepts, we noticed that the bird’s qualities matched my values. The hummingbird is associated with endurance and grit. Their flight reminds us to go with the flow and adapt to new situations.
Symbolically, the hummingbird represents positivity. Hummingbirds tell us to look out for love, joy and that good things are coming our way.
The bird still comes by. We’re BFFs now.
